I have often been asked “What is a Celebrant” and I thought it might useful to explain a little about the work I do.
Everything I do celebrates LOVE. Whether this is the love shared by a couple on their Wedding Day or the love expressed at a Celebration of Life as we say “Goodbye”, I bring creativity and individuality to all of life’s milestones, ensuring that the ceremony is unique and bespoke to that family.
Firstly, as a Wedding Celebrant, I will support couples to celebrate their marriage which has already been registered officially with a Registrar.
Unlike a religious officiant, such as a priest or rabbi, I will create a bespoke and personal ceremony which might also include non-religious elements or celebrate inter-faith unions.
I will often work with couples to create personalized and meaningful ceremonies that reflect their beliefs, values, and preferences. I will spend a long time listening to a couples Love Story of how they met and arrived at this point in their relationship. I will guide a couple through the process of designing their vows and selecting rituals or traditions to include in the ceremony such as Hand-fasting, Ring warming or a sand ceremony. Finally, its worth noting, that these ceremonies can take place ANYWHERE such as a family garden, local Hotel or on a beach. The choices are endless and only require the permission of the landowner.
Secondly, as a Life Celebrant or Funeral Celebrant, I will lead funerals or memorials to commemorate and celebrate the life of the deceased. I work closely with the family to gather information about their loved one, their values, and achievements. I will then create a personalized ceremony that honours the individual and provides comfort to those in mourning. This will often include music choices, Poems and Readings, flower colours and the Order of Service. I liaise closely with the Funeral Director to ensure that the ceremony meets the expectations of the family and their loved one.
Ceremonies can be religious or secular, depending on the preferences of the deceased and their family. Again, a ceremony can take place anywhere special to the family and their loved one. We can hold a Celebration of Life before or after a cremation or a woodland burial for example.
Its never too early to consider what you might want at your own funeral and with the advent of so many TV ads offering “fuss free cremations”, many of us are starting to think of how we would like our Celebration of Life to include.
Finally, a Celebrant such as myself, are also able to support families as they celebrate all kinds of Family Milestones. Vow Renewal, Baby Naming, Pet Cremations, Welcoming Adopted Children to the family are just a few of the typical events Celebrant such as I can elevate their significance in the lives of those involved. I can assist in planning and conducting a ceremony, by finding poems, readings, music and mini rituals which will all highlight and commemorate significant life events. .
Overall, as a celebrant I can play a crucial role in facilitating and guiding ceremonies that mark important moments in people’s lives, ensuring that these events are meaningful and reflective of the individuals involved.
